November 2001

A generous donation for $1,025 from the Louder/Valentine family and their church helped make life more comfortable for the orphans living in orphanage # 1 in Kharkiv, Eastern Ukraine. The Arnold family contributed $250.00 and First Methodist Church gave $424 for the same orphanage.  The total contribution funds received for Kharkiv orphanage #1 were $1,699 donated transportation services including driver fee, van, and gas. SRC used $113.00  for salaries and taxes associated with this project.  The total funds used for the Kharkiv orphanage donation totaled $1,586.

KHARKIV ORPHANAGE NEEDS

Tanya, the office secretary in Kyiv, was in almost constant communication with the Orphanage Director, Roman Volodomirovich. Through their numerous phone calls they managed to draw up a list of the orphanage’s most immediate needs. The proposed items were:

  • Electrical oil-filled Heater
  • Carpets (3m x 5m)
  • Electric weighing scales
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Baby walkers
  • Video player
  • Steam iron
  • Soft toys and videos

Supplies bought for Kharkiv orphanage

The orphanage director pleaded with us to help the orphanage purchase a van (Zhiguli model #7). They planned to use the vehicle to transport the orphans to the hospital as well as for children’s recreational needs. It will cost around $3,985.00 and the orphanage has already raised $3,365.00 for this need. They wanted approximately $500.00 for the final purchase.

We explained that the SRC policy requires wiring to the orphanage official account and using the wired funds according to the stated purpose. This way the amount would go to the orphanage, not to the director personally. The director welcomed this idea and assured us that any amount wired to the orphanage account would be spent as the donors requested

The decision was made to set aside $500.00 for wiring to the orphanage account (in order to buy a van). We also plan to purchase all the other supplies in Kyiv and deliver them to Kharkiv. There we will buy an 80-liter boiler, which costs $115.00. It will improve their heating system, especially during the fast-approaching winter.

Kharkiv ORPHANAGE HUMANITARIAN PROJECT

A delivery date was agreed upon, and the goods purchased.

Early on the morning of November 2nd, we set of for Kharkiv - Nikolai the driver, Joy from our staff, and Slavick Z., acting as translator.

When we arrived at the orphanage, it was obvious that a lot of renovation was taking place. The walls were being given a new coat of paint, and improvements were being made throughout the orphanage.  The director, Roman Vlodomirovich looked at the photos that we had brought of the Louder/Valentine family. He smiled as he read the letter from the family – remembering their kindness. As we settled down to discuss the goods that we had brought, and the purchase of the boiler, Roman Vlodomirovich mentioned that they are especially thankful to have the hot water boiler, which will allow them to have hot water all year.

Kharkiv orphans and a caregiver

Very soon all the supplies were unloaded and officially received by the orphanage administration. After that we went with the director to purchase the necessary boiler and deposit the money into the orphanage bank account for the future purchase of the van.

The orphanage workers looking at pictures

Upon returning to the orphanage, we visited the caregivers who had looked after Louder/Valentine’s adopted son. The children in the group were just on their way for a nap, and the women eagerly gathered around the photographs, asking questions and commenting on how much he had changed already.  They especially loved the pictures of him singing in church, and they were so excited to see how he had grown.

With tears in their eyes, they read the letter from the family, marveling over the fact that he is already speaking English. As each of them finished the letter, they quietly offered up a prayer for the family. They could barely contain their joy at seeing one of their ‘little ones’ in such a good home.

Slavik showed them the video that the family had sent him, and the women gathered round, eager to catch the small details, like where he slept, and did the house have a garden. They clapped their hands with excitement when they heard him speaking and understanding English.

All too soon it was time to return to Kyiv, but the women in the group asked that we pass on all their love to the family and to Robbie. They were very touched, not only by the generous gifts left, but also by the love that Robbie has found in his new family.
