could be returning to their families of origin, national or

ORPHANAGE
NEEDS
|
We called the orphanage director Levada Nikolai
Yegorovich to inform him of the donated funds and to discover their
needs. The director had already the worked out list of items: Nestle
Baby Formula:
|
| 1.
Baby formula “Nestogene” (400 gr) |
|
| 2.
Kasha “Baby” (300 gr) |
| 3.
Kasha “Vinny” (300 gr) |
| 4.
Mashed meat “Tikhoretsky” (100 gr) |
| We had once before delivered similar baby formula
that helped to benefit the lives of children there. |
| Having worked out the list of items, we called “Europroduct”
company that is the distributor of Nestle products in Ukraine, and
they invited us to their office. The dealers there offered a wide
range of the requested baby formula. They also helped to choose
proper items, and finally we signed the agreement for the purchase.
They had the prices in USD, so we didn’t have to change the
currency. The next day the company delivered all the items to our
office.
|
Here is the final and complete list of items
purchased for this project.

PLANNING THE
HUMANITARIAN TRIP
|

|
The trip was planned
for July 13, but we were delayed until July 16, Wednesday when our
van & driver were available.
Donetsk is situated
800 km from Kiev. The road was estimated to take about 10 hours. On
the way back to Kiev we also planned to drop 5 boxes of Xerox paper
at the Nikopol Orphanage, because we had left the paper behind at
our office on our recent donation trip there.
At 4 am the van was
loaded up with this enormous quantity of boxes, and early in the
morning we started on the road.

DONETSK ORPHANAGE HUMANITARIAN
PROJECT
 |
We arrived at 1:30 PM on Wednesday afternoon, and were shown to the
Director’s office. When we introduced ourselves, the Director,
Nikolai Yegorovich Levada said that they had been waiting for us and
he added that they remember the Russo family well, and he remembered
us from our previous visit. Then
we were shown to the stockwoman (pictures 3,4) who is responsible
for receiving the goods. Staff from the orphanage helped us to
unload the van. The lady checked all the items thoroughly, and when
she was satisfied with the result she said the children were going
to have the lunch, so we could join the staff in feeding the
children with the baby formula we had brought. |
|
We joined the staff doctors on their rounds to see the children. The
first group we saw was the youngest one (pictures 8,9,10,11,12,13).
They were sitting at the tables shouting while they waited for
lunch, but once they started eating they seemed to be satisfied. We
progressed to the older group, who also seemed pleased with the
lunch. (pictures 14,15).
The children there are well supplied with food, but they still
constantly need baby formula. The daily ration of a child is
estimated 3 UAH (about 0.57 USD) and the medical supply per child is
0.50 UAH (about 0.09 USD). The daily cost of a child residing in the
orphanage is 22 UAH (about 4.15 USD). Thanks to donations, the
children’s daily ration is now approximately 4.5 UAH (about 0.85
USD) instead of 3 UAH, and they were therefore very grateful for our
donation.

|
The orphanage workers told us about their additional
needs. They need fruits, juices, baby formula and vitamins for the
children. Mechanical equipment such as driers, ironing machines and
kitchen utensils would also benefit them in their work with the
children.

|
| They are very proud that last year 150 children of
350 were adopted by very good families.
The US families alone have adopted 180 children during the
last 3 years, and US families have adopted 2833 children of 6913
from 1996 to 2001. On average, foreigners adopt 70% of these
children and Ukrainian families adopt 30 % of the children.
There are also cases of adoptions by the orphanage workers.
They appreciated the
donation and were really glad to see us. The Director gave us a
letter of gratitude and a brochure, and he also asked us to thank
the Russo family from the orphanage staff and give their love. |
